Fuel for Thought….
I often wonder why I can’t stand to listen to music when I’m reading, writing or studying… I find music a distraction… but when I’m coding that’s a different story… stick an earphone in me and I can spew code like a run away pasta machine… weird…
I can have people talking and the tv on while I’m doing all these things and not lose a beat with what I’m doing. But with music its a different thing… it’s something I have a hard time phasing out.
I remember this scene from the movie “For Love of the Game” with Kevin Costner. He played the part of a professional baseball pitcher in the MLB. During his wind up routine he would say “Clear the Mechanism” and from then his mind would filter out all the noise and distraction from the crowd and coliseum so all that his brain would allow him to process was the sound of his own voice and the man batting infront of him.
When you break it down, reading and studying are exercises in comprehension, while the rest are application activities. Writing is comprehension plus the chore of having to be creative and logical…. coding is all that plus some abstract thinking thrown into the pot… which makes it a higher level of brain use than the former(s)… so can the line that music soothes and tames the savage beast apply to this? Or does music aide, order and structure my brain when I’m thinking spatially?
Well time to expose the fact that I don’t know where I’m going with this train of thought so I thought I’d just park it over here and call it a day… yep, time to move on to some no brainer activities.

Speaking of Kevin Costner, I just dig him in the Movie; 3000 Miles to Graceland… its a quirky and dark film that revolves around the plot of a bunch of ex-con *slash* Elvis fan’s who rob a casino in Las Vegas at the height of an Elvis convention. Just don’t expect to get the meaning of life out of this movie after watching it though. Yep, leave your brain at home and get ready for a movie just oozing with testosterone.
