Close Encounter of the Hoop Kind

Took my son to a basketball court today and showed him how to shoot some hoops. Albeit he couldn’t reach the ring, he did understand what I was doing, and that was to put the ball in the ring. After showing him how to make a free throw and a lay up he immediately tried to mimic what I was doing with the little violet ball he was carrying.

His version of my shooting the ball was his looking at the rim and throwing the ball in that direction. Layup, was him asking his mom to carry him then he would toss the ball up in the air once he got near the ring. His version of dribbling was him throwing the ball down on the court.

What we couldn’t understand was where he got this mannerism of swaying the ball from left to right (and vice versa) while holding it firmly in both hands. It was as if he was about to execute a ball and head fake which could be the precursor to a crossover move.

Well, whether he learns to love this game or not it won’t matter to me. What’s important is that he gets to experience a lot of things in his life that can make him a well rounded person.
