Don’t have a cow, man

One of the most vivid memories that I carry of my childhood was when I was about 3-4 years old and my Dad brought me to the farm he was working in to meet a cow.
I think it started one meal time and I was harping about the sesame street episode where they show how milk was being milked from cows. Of course I think I was more interested in the large container truck where the milk was being stored in in that episode, but I think I’m stretching too much already my recollection of that particular memory. With that entry my Dad asked me if I wanted to see a cow upclose and I of course answered in the affirmative.
What I recall very clearly is waking up very early to go to the farm. Riding in my Dad’s car, stopping by a field then seeing a cow being led to us by its handler. With that came a small plastic container with salt and a small stack of freshly cut grass. My Dad started to feed it with the grass then asked me to come close. When I attempted to touch it he didn’t allow me to so I stepped back and watched it munch on its meal. Afterwards my Dad took a handful of salt and I watched the cow eat it off his hand.
After that I don’t remember anything anymore. Funny that what I remember the most are the times that I was able to spend some one on one time with my Dad. Like the time he brought me out to buy a new pair of shoes because we were going out to meet relatives.
These cows belong to the farm beside us. When I saw them like this I was hoping to bring my son to see them once he wakes up and we go for our daily morning walk. Alas when I brought him to that place the cows were already gone, most likely brought out already to forage in some other place. Nevertheless, there will always be tomorrow and countless other cows to meet.
That’s one of the things I appreciate about living in Davao. We don’t have to go some place far in order to teach our son about farm animals. Just in our neighborhood he can see chickens, pigs, goats and cows. Of course now we’re intentionally skipping the apart about telling him what part they play in the food chain *snicker*

Yeah, as parents I’ve realized that we must also make an effort to leave good childhood memories for our kids.
