New Cellphone

Nokia 1100I finally received the free cellphone that came along with the laptop I bought a few weeks back… it was a Motorola W218… it’s got a built in camera and a radio… nifty features for a phone that I hardly use… but I’m not complaining, I’ve come to realize that cellphone disconnection is bliss…

I’m not really the “talky” type. My wife used to complain that I hardly texted her when she was still my girlfriend. Maybe because I prefer to let my mouth do the talking rather than my thumbs…

Taking stock all the phones I’ve owned, I’ve realized that the best phone I’ve ever had was a Nokia 1100. It was the ultra low end model of Nokia. I had to go through 2 phones before I found out that the best phone for me is the cheapest being sold.

For the reason being:

  1. The Resale value - lets face it, a brand new high end phone will have its cost knocked down by as much as 50% after 6 months.
  2. The Price - Since its cheap, pickpockets will not want to steal it from you [this statement is not a personal guarantee].
  3. The Peace of Mind - You won’t be losing much sleep if you lose it, drop it, drown it, etc [insert destructive verb here]

And the best feature of the phone that I can’t do without? The flashlight. I used to laugh at the manual when it said that the phone had a flash light because it sounded absurd at that time. But now, I can’t count the number of times this phone’s flashlight has saved my neck. Like when I had to look for some stuff that fell off my pockets in a car that dropped me off at night, fixing a flat tire at night and having some nuts roll off from where you left them. Not to mention, the countless times people have asked me if I had a flashlight (Ye-Ah!, like people bring flashlights with them from their house, to work?, but yeah I have a flashlight with me.)

This reminds me of the time I was in Japan and I was laughing at the latest thing in rave. Cellphone’s with cameras. Preposterous I said. Of course now its something most people can’t do without. Memories and special moments can be easily stored and carried now. Not to mention that it has erased the notion that cameras are a luxury item and only the few can own a camera.

Here’s another cellphone anecdote. I was once in a meeting with my boss and some other folks. You’d think that I had the cheapest phone at the table, but then somebody’s phone rings and this guy whips out his 6210 and starts talking. This phone probably retails for P1000 second hand already and yet he is still reluctant to part with it. And the funny thing?, this guy is the richest dude in the room. From this I’ve also learned that you don’t need an expensive cellphone to tell people your status in life. But hey, if cellphone’s are your thing, don’t let this post of mine lay a guilt trip on you *snicker*

Update: I was texting my brother this evening and when I got to the end of my message, I couldn’t make the smiley face I usually put to end my message. It’s a ‘u’ with two dots on the top… GRarrrrr!!!!
