Answer: As soon as they can get their photo taken.

My wife and I decided to get our son a passport because we found out that you could avail of the special courtesy line at the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA). Meaning that you didn’t have to endure the long lines and the numbering system at the DFA. My wife found that out when she went there to get a new passport because her’s had already expired and because it was still listed under her maiden name.

Now all I have to do is get an NSO authenticated birth certificate of my son as well as present my passport during the application as proof of “parentage”.

Of course when I say DFA, I mean the DFA in Davao City. I remembered renewing my passport in Manila and it went like a breeze. Of course I had to come in very, very, very early. The downside now, is because of this new machine readable passport that the Philippine issues, it will take about 2 weeks to get your passport out and that’s already with the express package.

Hmmm.. this just gives me more reason to apply my son a passport as soon as possible. Anyway, I suggest you renew your passport via the DFA online appointment. It will save you the hassle of waking up very early and fall in a long queue.
