Sun Micro Acquires MySQL
Whoa!!!… didn’t see that coming…
It might not mean much to people… but MySQL is practically the Database that powers most web servers out there…
My first encounter with MySQL was in 2002 when my Japanese Trainer (jisshu-sensei) mentioned to me that there was a supposedly good and free RDBMS out there comparable to Oracle. Since it was still in its infancy, not much documentation in Japanese was available for it.
So he asked me to take a look at it. I did the tests and checked that it was stable enough to work in a production environment and gave my thumbs up to my trainer. When he came over to the Philippines I gave him the tutorial on how to set it up and configure the transactional engine.
Boy time sure has passed since then. But I have to say that the ease and simplicity of MySQL has saved my neck a couple of times already.
As to the fears that other operating systems and programming languages will get the short end of the stick in favor of Sun’s products (Solaris and Java), MySQL has this to say:
MySQL grew with LAMP and MySQL without LAMP at its core is simply unimaginable
