Old Friends

img_1649.JPGThree College buddies came down to Davao this week to attend the wedding of another College classmate who’s fiancee was from Davao. The last time I met these guys was about two years ago when we had a mini-reunion of sorts. By that time I was on my way to Davao. One of them was the bestman while another was part of the entourage. I volunteered to take care of the guys so that that groom didn’t have to worry about their welfare while they were in Davao.

I have to say that it was a very fun week for all of us. These were the guys I’ve sweat blood and cried tears with as we slogged our way through a tough engineering course in DLSU-Manila. We developed bonds of friendship as we worked through projects, tutored each other on complex equations and theories as well as helped each other out on our thesis.

Aside from catching up on the two year gap between our last meeting, we retold stories of College life that had us laughing ourselves to exhaustion. There was also the compulsory running through the names of batchmates and finding out if anybody knew where they were now. As well as the odd, trying to remember a classmates name, by describing his physical appearance or unique quirky habit.

On one of our drives the song “Virtual Insanity” by Jamiroquai was playing on the radio and I couldn’t help but comment how this song used to be “new” and now DJ’s refer to it as part of the stations “retro” weekend playlist.

Oh, how time has indeed passed on us as topics of girlfriends, ex’s and failed courtships have now been replaced by wives, kids and impending weddings. While Assignments and Group Projects have been replaced by Work, No-Work, Business and Failed Businesses. Success has now been redefined from the previous raw score to just either pass or fail.

On parting, some of them didn’t want to leave as it meant having to sever the warm fuzzy feeling that Nostalgia brings whenever we are with Old Friends. I have to admit that I did feel a tinge of sadness as I watched them fade from my rear view mirror as my wife and I sped off from the airport.

So here’s to Old Friends, who in their contact with us help shaped and mold us through the influence of their friendship and shared experiences.

Engineering students at DLSU ha? So, this is a bunch of nerds then? Hehe. And when I say “nerds” it’s a compliment, bai. Cheers to old friendships!
