UAAP-NCAA Allstar Weekend Samsung Slam Dunk Championship
Rey Guevarra of Letran got a perfect score of 10 from each judge for his final dunk of the evening which had him dunking over a sitting teammate [click on the image on the left]. With that showcase of his dunking prowess, he ran away cleanly with the 2007 Samsung UAAP-NCAA AllStar Weekend Slam Dunk Championship.
10 players were selected from NCAA and UAAP schools to participate in the Slam Dunk event. Of which the top 3 advanced to compete in the Finals by a judging panel composed of Jasmine Payo (Inquirer), Theodore Jurado, Fernando Lozano (MIT), Rolando Perez (UE) and Peter Musngi (ABS-CBN).
Sam Ekwe of SBC made a 360 left handed dunk to get into the Finals while Hans Thiele of UE threw the ball off the glass before dunking it. Rey Guevarra meanwhile threw down an emphatic two handed jam with his legs spreading and flailing. This was the kicker for him to impress the judges and get into the finals. Last years defending champion, Elmer Espiritu of UE, failed to make it to the finals as he missed his qualifying dunks.
Each player had 60 seconds to do 2 dunk attempts, from there the player had the right to choose which of the 2 dunks he wanted to be scored by the judges.
Sam Ekwe could have given Rey Guevarra a run for his money given his third dunk, which was an alley oop pass, except that it was already over the time limit hence the need for the judges to deduct from his score. Hans Thiele missed out on his dunks in the finals so the judges gave him the minimum score.
