A few weeks back my good friend Andrew gave me some goodies from his mother’s bakeshop (Mam Bebs Bakeshop and Refreshment Parlor) to try out so that we could give our honest opinion about it. From what I’ve heard from Andrew, these are decades old recipes perfected over the years as it was passed along from each generation in their family.

Right off the starting gate my entire family fell in love with the packaging. The goodies were placed in thick and well decorated box. Bonus points because its made of Recyclable Packaging! We didn’t see any oil stains piercing through this baby while carrying it. If you’re planning to give these as giveaways definitely you won’t be embarrassed by the packaging. Just be sure to tell them that its food that’s inside, otherwise they might think its a gift and store it under the Christmas Tree :D

Just to prove to you that I enlisted everybody short of our dogs to review this, I asked my son to open the box full of goodies. Here he is excited and bouncing all over the bed because he’s feeling up to the task.

The money shot of my son opening the box. Great practice for him too when he has his 1st birthday party this year and has to start opening his presents. Of course the box has now officially become part of my son’s toys. He’s in the stage in life where he takes joy in discovering the million and one uses of the verbs “close” and “open.”

First thing we tried were the potato rolls… hey its as big as baby!… ok, kidding but I just wanted to take that shot :D Here’s the real shot of the potato rolls.

My wife had the banana bar.

While I had the apple pie.

Ok Ok, I couldn’t wait anymore to take the shot as I heard the apple pie beckon me to eat it already so I attacked it with gusto.

The Bottom Line:

  1. Everything tasted great, from the potato rolls to the banana bar and finally the Apple Pie *burp* The only complaint of my wife was that she found the topping of the banana bar to be too sweet, one can easily wipe that off however.
  2. Plus points for using recyclable materials in their packaging. Great to reuse as a gift box since the wax paper used prevents the oils from staining the box. Further stress testing on the sturdiness of the box will be undertaken by the team. Results however will be revealed in a much later date. Testing will be initiated by my son… hehehe
  3. We were all surprised however with the softness and moisture retention of the pastries. This was even after it was stored in the refrigerator overnight in an ordinary plastic container. Unlike most pastries stored in the ref that harden, dry out and end up tasting like the entire plethora of produce in the refrigerator (exactly the reason why I forbid durian from being stored in our refrigerators), Mam Bebs goodies stayed moist and tasty. I can give a little theory as to why that is so. The main reason could be the correct mixture of oil and flour, therein probably lies the secret recipe of Andrew’s family in making their pastries taste good by keeping it fresh for long amounts of time.

Most likely if you’ve had a treat in one of the more popular Coffee Shops in Davao you’ve already unknowingly had a Mam Bebs Pastry. As Andrew mentioned that they supply some of the Coffee Shops in Davao with their pastries.
