UE hands a 20pt Defeat to DLSU in UAAP Season 70

ue.pngThe first round meeting of DLSU and UE, coached by brothers Franz and Dindo Pumaren, had Franz footing the bill for tonight’s family dinner. Brother Dindo Pumaren steered the UE Red Warriors to a 20 pt win against his older brother’s Green Archers. 96-76 was the final score.

The previous meeting of these two teams was in the Nike Summer League Semi Finals where DLSU edged out UE by 3 pts to barge into the finals. DLSU eventually went on to win the Finals against a “Rookie” laden FEU squad.

Today was payback for the Red Warriors as they took the early lead in the game. It was a seesaw match till the third quarter when Lee, Fampulme, Canizares and Martinez wrecked havoc on DLSU’s defense while clamping down on the Archers Offense to bring the lead to 12 pts at the end of the 3rd.

Come the fourth quarter UE continued its rampage by keeping the intensity of their defense up and hitting their shots. The lead went as high as 26 pts for the Red Warriors before garbage time had OJ Cua hitting 2 consecutive 3’s to bring the lead down to 20.

My Keys to the Win: Defense, Defense, Defense

These two teams employ an almost similar basketball Philosophy because of the bonds of kinship that the two coaches have. Not to mention that Dindo Pumaren once sat in the bench of Franz prior to his taking the helm at UE. In Philosophy they believe that Defense is what creates the Offense for them. So today the Team that had the better defense was the one that won.

  1. TY Tang, Rico Maierhofer and JV Casio were held in check by the Red Warriors which was a big blow to the offense of the Archers.
  2. UE showed a better trapping technique. DLSU backcourt turned over the ball a couple times due to bad passes made after being trapped at the halfcourt line. This also had the effect of DLSU’s offense not being setup properly.
  3. Defense begets Offense - I remember one of the announcers saying that in the third and fourth quarter, the UE’s bench players even out scored the starters of the Archers.
  4. UE winning the battle of the paint - UE’s Big Men outshone and out hustled La Salle’s big men today. Borboran was a none factor in the offense but he did his job well on the defensive end, guarding the big men of the Archers. That is a testament to the the skills training they received from Gido Babilonia. The Assistant Coach of UE who died early on this year due to heart failure.
  5. DLSU’s 3 Point shots not going in - this was critical as the frontline of the Archers had a hard time doing their thing in the post because UE knew that the Archers were cold from the outside.

Great Game for the UE Red Warriors, they really showed mastery over the Green Archers in this game. So now they have the best record in the league while DLSU is tied with ADMU with 3-1 cards. The two rivals are slated to meet this thursday at 4PM. After the battle for first place, we now have the battle for second place *snicker*

Personally I’m glad that we had incurred this loss. It takes the pressure off the boys to maintain the best record as they were heavily touted to take the lead early on because of their strong showing in the pre-season leagues. From what I remember, teams who had the best records rarely won the championship in the UAAP. It sheds this aura of invincibility and makes the players think that, hey! I have to work better. Not to mention that a loss early on gives the coaches time to adjust and think of new plays.

I thought this would be the last of games with 20 point blow outs and 90 pt scores, because teams had already scouted their rivals. This was punctuated by the spate of games that had final scores below 70. But guess that wasn’t true with UE’s win. UE sure got me impressed with this win of theirs, it was both a blow out and a 90 pt win.

I think that La Salle also failed to pass the ball like the Warriors did and that resulted to few assists and difficult shot attempts. They got very few second chance points too, so they were one and done pretty much the whole game while UE had multiple shots at the basket.

Hey, do you have a source for boxscores and statistics for UAAP? If you do, could you please share it? :D

Great site, by the way! :)

I think The Warriors have all the chance this year 2 be the champions beating the hell out of other teams in their way like la salle, UP & FEU in their yesterday games,
