University of the EastThe UE Red Warriors narrowly defeated the Ateneo Blue Eagles with a score of 76-73. UE Forward Elmer Espiritu contributed a key shot to give UE the lead then another to make it a 3 point difference. ADMU missed a potential tying 3 pointer via a shot taken by Jai Reyes.

This cements UE’s position on the top of the UAAP heap. What was surprising though were the players top scoring for UE. Shooting Guard Paul Lee and C/F Hans Thiele.

For Ateneo, the Iceman has cometh as Chris Tiu suddenly got out of his first game slump to score 16 pts. To the doubters of Claiford Arao, he’s for real! He contributed 15 pts in the game. I really felt bad when people heckled and laughed at Ford Arao. This guy was a Blue Chipper in the Highschool level for the San Beda Red Cubs. He teamed up with DLSU’s JV Casio to beat the Letran Squires in the NCAA Jr’s Finals. The Squires were bannered by DLSU bound OJ Cua (Jrs MVP) and PJ Walsham (Rookie of the Year).

This guy didn’t develop really well in his early years in the league unlike JV Casio who entered a team known for developing great Guards. He was constantly heckled for his bad shots and penchant for losing the ball. Not to mention that he got over shadowed by the arrival of shot blocking monster Japeth Aguilar. Hopefully this will be his year to put his detractors to shame. Keep it up Ford!

UE 76 - Lee 13, Gregorio 12, Thiele 10, Martinez 9, Espiritu 9, Borboran 7, Arellano 7, Llagas 3, Lingganay 2, Fampulme 2, CaƱizares 2, Bandaying 0, Reyes 0.

ATENEO 73 - Tiu 16, Arao 15, Barracoso 12, Baclao 6, Reyes 6, Al-Hussaini 6, Nkemakolam 4, Salamat 3, Monfort 3, Laterre 2, Austria 0, Escueta 0.

Despite losing, I think the Blue Eagles are showing a lot of improvement this year.

I agree with you Ria, a little more into the season, with the team maturing further, ADMU will not feel the loss of Macky, JC and Doug :D
