DLSU gets first Win in UAAP Season 70
The DLSU Green Archers did indeed blot out the sun with their arrows as they cruised to a 21 pt win vs the Fighting Maroons of UP. The game ended with a score of 82-61 but the lead of the Archers went as high as 23 pts during the game.
As the first game of the season, there were a lot of opening jitters with not only the players but also with Channel 23. There were instances where the scoreboard could not be seen as well as the timer on the lower right corner of the TV. TV based Fans had a hard time knowing how much time was left as the game progressed.
Absent from the game for DLSU were Marko Batricevic and Badeer Malabes, both were out with injuries. Malabes had a pulled hamstring while Marko was expected to come back on DLSU’s 3rd Game. DLSU started with TY Tang, Pocholo Villanueva, PJ Walsham, Rico Maierhofer and James Mangahas. UP started with Agbayani, Sison, Gamboa, De Asis and Serios.
On a sad note, the main man for the Archers in that game, James Mangahas went down in the 4Q after re-injuring his left ankle with a sprain. He did not come back to the game and it was unsure as of this time what the extent of his injuries are. Mangahas was a revelation in that game as the SG/SF showcased his post game to the small UP player defending him. Normally you would expect to see James Mangahas facing up against his defender, shooting the 3 or driving hard to get points.
The second stringers were playing so well for the Archers that at one point, Coach Pumaren didn’t bother to focus the offense of his team on the veterans. Rico, TY and Cholo stayed quiet on the 2nd to 3rd quarters. Rico was hampered with foul trouble and even fouled out of the game with 1 min remaining.
The desire to win was present from the opening tip as the DLSU raced to a 14-0 lead in the first before UP was able to answer back with a 3ptr from Sison. The Full Court Press and Half Court Trapping Defense of the Archers were seen again after its now you-see-it-now-you-don’t showing in the preseason tournaments.
With Marvin Cruz gone from the lineup, UP had to rely on Gamboa, a Rookie from the Ateneo Highschool, to quarterback for them. He was immediately replaced once it was noticed that Coach Franz ran the offense through TY Tang in order to take advantage of the inexperience of Gamboa.
DLSU’s tall lineup paid dividends for them as they out rebounded the Maroon’s 26-16 at the end of the first half. They also out shot them 43% to 33% and committed less turnovers (8-12.) At the end of the half, Cholo lead the team with 14 while Mangahas had 10 and Walsham 6. Walsham benefited from drop passes from his teammates reminiscent of the Ryan Arana and Mac Cardona drop passing plays of 2004. For UP at the half, Reyes chalked up 8 pts while Lopez and Gamboa contributed 4 pts.
DLSU’s defense didn’t only rely on the press as its zone forced UP to shoot from the perimeter. The downside was that UP wasn’t hitting any of its outside shots. The normally streak shooting Migs De Asis (a DLSZ Junior Archer alum) knocked down his 1st 3 ptr only in the 3rd quarter with 5:52 remaining. Come the fourth quarter, the veterans of the Archers made their presence felt as TY, Rico and JV Casio started scoring at will.
A little disturbance erupted in the fourth when Brian Ilad and Season 69 Rookie of the Year Awardee, Woody Co, got called for double unsportsmanlike fouls after they tripped and elbowed each other on the floor. Of course afterwards they shook hands and started patting each other on the butt.
Cholo came home with the best player of the game as he tallied 18 pts, 6 rebs and 4 assists. PJ Walsham also came home with an award for tallying 8 pts, 4 rebs and 2 blocks.
Some other interesting factoids:
- Accenture was sponsoring the event (as first mentioned by Batangas Blogger Mr. Nice Ash)… great Tiger Woods ad BTW
- That the male cheer dancers of UP were being tossed up in the air and forming human pyramids during the halftime show instead of the usual female members.
- That the female cheer dancer uniforms of La Salle weren’t exposing their mid sections.
- There was a backboard Camera akin to what can be seen in the NBA which made for great views of lay ups and fastbreaks conversions.
- U.S. Ambassador Kristie A. Kenney was once again present to watch the game.
- The opening of the 70th Season happened on the 7th day of the 7th month of 2007.
- UP was supposed to host this season but swapped with UST for next years hosting, so that it coincides with the University’s 100th year anniversary.
DLSU - Villanueva 18, Mangahas 14, Tang 12, Casio 12, Walsham 8, Maeirhofer 4, Co 4, Atkins 3, Ilad 2, Cua 2, Barua 2, Lee 0.
UP - Reyes 14, Co 12, Gamboa 8, Lopez 6, De Asis 6, Rivera 5, Serios 5, Sison 3, Agbayani 2, Marfori 0, Rosales 0, Hipolito 0, Epres 0.
