Siopao Convert…

As a kid growing up I never liked Siopao… the taste never was acceptable to my palate…

However, as I’m typing this now I’m munching on some Siopao that an Aunt of mine sent. So what caused this remarkable turnaround on something that I once abhorred?

While visiting that same Aunt at her work in the Uyanguren district she had served me and my wife Siopao during merienda (afternoon snack). Rather than turn her down for her hospitality I decided to eat the said bun. To my surprise I wasn’t sickened with the taste. To this day I have yet to meet a Siopao I don’t like… then again, I might say otherwise if the Siopao’s origins are not from my hometown.

I’ve realized, in order for me to have finally enjoyed Siopao, I’ve had to:

  1. Get Married.
  2. Settle back in my hometown of Davao.
  3. Live through five presidents.
  4. Reach thirty.

I’ve still haven’t met the Durian variety though that will make me enjoy the fruit that is synonymous with Davao.
