dlsu.pngI just watched a heart stopping game today. It was DLSU vs UE in the semifinals of the Nike Summer League. The Good, DLSU won 73-70. The Bad, DLSU was leading by 17 in the second quarter then little by little started losing the lead by being suffocated by UE’s defense. Aside from the defense of UE, DLSU’s 3pt shooting didn’t seem to be accurate anymore in the 2nd half, hence they couldn’t break the zone defense of UE in the half court set.

When UE and DLSU meet it is a test of two similar systems against each other. Primarily because the two coaches are brothers and they both use the Pumaren System. Hey, did I mention that their last names are Pumaren?

jayvee.jpgThe Pumaren System calls for full court trapping defense during most parts of the game. This system has helped DLSU gain a pocketfull of championships for itself. I remember reading somewhere before that it was derived from Rick Pitino’s System of Full Court pressure defense the entire length of the game. This helped win an NCAA Championship for the University of Kentucky Wild Cats which was coached by Pitino at that time. Of course one way for the system to work is that the players have to be properly conditioned to play in the system that calls for round the clock defense till the final buzzer sounds. I’ve noticed that it usually takes a year for a player to be broken in to the Pumaren system before he can be a fully effective cog of the machinery.

The last time I saw DLSU play it was in an invitational cup. Looking at them now it looks as if they beefed up a notch. Most notable were Casio, Cholo V. and Rico M. Their added Upper body strength will help them match up against stronger players. Not to mention, out muscle weaker defenders.

By beating UE, they will now face FEU in the Championship game. FEU earlier on defeated the Mapua Cardinals to book a seat in the Finals. The finals will be on Sunday, June 10 at 3:00PM.

[…] The previous meeting of these two teams was in the Nike Summer League Semi Finals where DLSU edged out UE by 3 pts to barge into the finals. DLSU eventually went on to win the Finals against a “Rookie” laden FEU squad. Today was payback for the Red Warriors as they took the early lead in the game. It was a seesaw match till the third quarter when Lee, Fampulme, Canizares and Martinez wrecked havoc on DLSU’s defense while clamping down on the Archers Offense to bring the lead to 12 pts at the end of the 3rd.
