Choosing the lesser evil…

PhilippinesJust a day away from the election. Everytime its election season flashbacks of a college religion class comes to my mind… our teacher was doing a round robin of the class population asking us what our opinion was on the elections… Seeking for a unique answer to the question, the answer miraculously popped into my head:

Elections, for me, was never an exercise in choosing good from bad nor right from wrong, but rather choosing the lesser of two evils…

Yay! for me… a very unique answer from what my classmates gave… aside from charming the pants off of my religion teacher, that answer had the lasting effect of being the driving force for me to troop to the polling place every election…I’ve long been enlightened to the fact that Graft, Corruption and Dirty Politicians have long been a part of History… Crap, I believe it even started when the Snake tempted Eve to take a bite out of the proverbial apple in the Garden of Eden (how’s that for throwing some religion into this post?)… In short, I believe its not a unique-only-in-the-Philippines thing.

I may have missed out on EDSA I (I was in the third grade) and EDSA II (I was in Japan), but I don’t miss it, because every election year I get the chance to have my own EDSA Revolution by casting my vote.

We can complain and clamor for change, but we should also celebrate life’s little treasures: that we are living in a Democracy and no longer a Dictatorship, where we are allowed to complain and clamor for change (till we pass out)… and that in our own little way, we are each given a shot at shaping the destiny and history of our country…
