John Amaechi: 1st Openly Admitted Gay Player from the NBA

john_amaechi.jpg5 year veteran John Amaechi has come out of the closet and admitted that he was Gay. This is a historic first because he is the first basketball player from the NBA to do so.

Amaechi played 5 years as a center in the NBA. He initially started his career at Cleveland (95′-96′), then moved to Orlando (99′), Utah (01′~03′) and finally ended his career at Houston. He’s currenly a sporst broadcaster in England and active with social work via his ABC foundation.

His book, entitled “Man in the Middle” is scheduled to come out this Feb 14th. This book discusses his early life, career and experiences as a “closeted” professional athelete.

    This is truely a shocker. I was surprised when I read about it in the news. You wouldn’t think this was possible but then there are also gay people in the military services.

    I wonder who else or who was gay in the NBA?

    @verns - Grant Hill? I don’t think so. Like Marc said, he’s happily married to Tamia, the singer.
