FIBA suspension lifted on Philippine Basketball
If you were wondering why the Philippines had no entry in this year’s Asian Games in DOHA Qatar, its because the governing international body of basketball (FIBA) had suspended us because of this brouhaha over the Basketball Association of the Philippines (BAP.) What is more embarrassing is the fact that because of our suspension, the 2005 ASEAN games had to make do without basketball as one of the events because we were the host country.
Today FIBA secretary general Patick Bauman announced that the ban had been lifted after getting consensus between BAP and the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP) to merge and form a united group to manage Philippine Basketball (to be named BAP-SBP). Previously BAP was the only recognized body by FIBA to organize Philippine teams to compete in their events internationally.
When the Philippine Olympic Committee (POC) suspended BAP as the representing body of basketball, FIBA suspended the Philippines from joining any international competition after that. All the preparation the PBA players did to prepare for the Olympics went for naught. The problem happened so long ago that I already forgot the exact details but it went something like that.
Personally for me, the Fat Lady has far from sung. Not till I see that new organization registered at the SEC and the official document in Black and White.
