I hate Durian… and here’s why…

durian_pulp_2.JPGI hate the fact that a single piece of a durian fruit, sealed in static cling, left in the refrigerator is enough to contaminate the entire contents of the refrigerator.

Contaminate as in everything will start to taste like durian… a whole bowl of fruit salad, an entire loaf of bread, etc… you name it, stick it in the ref, leave it overnight and it’s going to start tasting like durian… it’s like the essence of the fruit tries to break out from the static cling and crawl it’s way into the plastic wrappings of other food products… which is probably what happens in real life…

It’s common belief that anybody who’s from Mindanao just loves to eat Durian… It looks like that I am an exception to that rule as I never acquired the taste for the spiny, cream flavored fruit…. even my wife, who comes from Northern Luzon, just loves the fruit and munches it down at every opportunity she can get… but me?, who practically grew up with the stench of durian sticking to my clothes, can’t stand the taste of it… the smell yes, but the taste… nope. It’s not that I never tried, a few months back I tried picking up the fruit and eating it again (the last time I tried I was still in grade school), but still the taste is not palatable to me. Oh well, I guess it’s just not meant to be.

It’s true that in the domestic airport you can tell if the flight is coming from Mindanao because once the doors open the waft of exiting air reeks of the odor of the durian fruit.

If ever I become some big-shot in this world, it will be one of my assistant’s functions to make sure that durian isn’t served to me during dinners. But till that time comes, I’m skipping the fruit trays whenever I catch a whiff of that bugger. *snicker*
