Top 10 Things I’m Thankful for in 2006
The ten things I’m thankful for in 2006 begins with:
The Birth of My Son - it took us almost a year to conceive him. Then the skepticism of whether my wife was pregnant or not, because we already had some false readings in the pregnancy test. Then the joyous news that it was indeed positive. On the sixth month there was the pre-term labor scare that had my wife confined in the hospital. The delicate third term that followed which had her confined to her bed. And finally the joyous home stretch that had a false labor and a very quick 38 minute labor. Every day with him is a first and makes us feel that we are truly blessed. Truly children are God’s blessings to us.
My Wife - Behind every man is a woman. Times maybe sometimes hard, but it’s great to know that I have you by my side. Enough said.
Good Health - I hope this continues for the following year. No major maladies in 2006 for us.
Wise Business Decisions - Without much remorse of having wasted capital money, we cut our canteen business with a local university. Turns out that it was a very good business decision. Those who chose to stay behind and slog it out sufferred terribly because of high rent charges and stiff price competition. I realized, in business, that a good philosophy to keep is to try and not be anybody’s B*tch *snicker* And my bananas started earning already and I also broke even with my expenses… err, but don’t think I’m earning much from them because it’s just a small plot.
Relatives, Extended Families, Old Friends, and New Found Friends - This has got to be a constant in these lists. Who can’t help but give thanks to the relatives and friends who have helped you through this year? As well as to the new people you met and forged new friendships with.
A Good Job - I’m blessed with having a good job right now. I get to meet a lot of people and learn a lot of things. I crossed a lot of industries and land in the process. Initially I was hesitant because I knew that this wouldn’t be paying much, but hey the experience to work with very highly skilled people and learn from them was well worth it.
A Chance to Bond - At gatherings I’ve attended at the end of the year, conversations always touched on the topic of me and my wife having time to bond with our son. Because my wife gave up working and my time is very flexible. And the generalization that children will remember you most for what you did with them, rather than what you gave them. Which is true, because what I remember most about my dad was the time when I was 3 years old, he took time off from work, picked me up at the house and went out to buy some shoes. I hardly remember the shoes, but the fact that he took time out from his busy schedule to spend a day with me was the part that I still remember till now. I relish in the time I spend with my son, taking care of him and watching him grow right before my eyes.
Travel, Travel, Travel - I think I’ve ridden in all local carriers because of my job. I got to crisscross Mindanao on official business (but not yet the western and eastern parts.) I got the opportunity to meet tons of people: politicians, clergy men, scholars, leeches, hanger-ons, snake-oil salesmen, captains of industry, generally nice guys and more.
Finally Learned Golf - Ten years from when I first started to learn the game on and off, I finally achieved a respectable swing. Too bad that I never had the opportunity to play a real game with my Dad when he was still alive. Maybe a couple of months in I can start playing in an actual Golf Course.
A year wiser a year older…
