Two Trips…
Two trips to the hospital within the span of a week… Last friday my son had a small spot of blood in his urine that sent us into a panic… so we rushed him to the hospitals ER… after a urine analysis we found out that he had a severe case of Urinary Tract Infection… after some antibiotics, which the bacteria was found to be resistant to during the culture test and yet worked like a charm, his fever came down…
The bad news however is that he has to be circumcised to prevent him from getting UTI all the time because it’s not a natural occurance for male babies. According to the doctors we talked to, circumcision usually is the most effective countermeasure and what they prescribe… errr, it’s not really bad news because I know 10 years down the road he’ll thank me for getting him circumcised early… *snicker* (It’s normal practise for Filipino boys to get circumcised when they are near puberty, usually during the summer vacation…)
Today again we rushed him to the hospital ER because we thought he was dehydrated… he just kept throwing up a portion of his milk and pooped 6 times today… more than the normal… the doctor explained that it could be because of the antibiotics in his system… so she gave us some oral re-hydration salts and a lesson as to what are the symptoms of a dehydrated baby: sunken eyes, irritability, dry lips, a sunken scalp, vomitting… and of course another action item to get him another stool exam tomorrow…
The funny thing, when he got there was that my son was smiling all the time, at us and all the people at the ER…like he wasn’t sick at all… he just loves being at the ER, so we were teasing him that he just missed the ER doctor… or it could be because he just loves being lulled to sleep in the car… or could it be that he wants to be in the medical profession when he grows up?
I’m worried however with the amount of pills that my son is starting to take… instead of developing a natural resistance to diseases, he could become dependent on medicines all the time… early on I remembered not being allowed to take antibiotics because my dad didn’t want me to be too dependent on them… same with my brother doctor who refused to prescribe any antiobiotics, unless it was really really necessary, so that my body would develop a stronger immune system… they’re firm believers in the saying that “anything that doesn’t kill you, makes you stronger…” I have to agree with my mother-in-law whenever she says that during our time (as kids) we didn’t have this (ex. formulated breast milk) and that (ex. airconditioning) and that we still grew up fine healthy and strong… I guess that’s the power of marketing for you *snicker*

hey hoop!
I hope your super adorable baby is fine now. I don’t know much about motherhood or fatherhood but I ‘m with you when you mentioned about the amount of pills your son is taking. Is he breastfed?
Thanks Verns!, yes my son is breastfed about 40%… the doctors were saying that its better than formula milk because the babies will develop a stronger immune system.
i am very sorry to read this. but thankful for your son has caring parents. i wish that your son continue getting better. and eventually be far from being sick again.
Thanks Mr Nice Ash
