A Tale of Two Balls…
With the plastic balls I’ve been using for practice I was getting about 42ft of distance with a 7 iron. Out of curiosity I decided to switch to a new ball since the practice balls that I’ve been using were dirty, weathered and already had their fair share of seeing the business end of a golf club…
The good news with this switch is that I’ve added about 4ft of distance to my swing. The bad news, since I’m getting more distance I’m losing a lot more balls since they are already reaching the bushes in my house.
I’m attributing this added range to the fact that the new balls have a smoother surface as compared to the old balls whose edges are quite rough and embedded with dirt. This adds additional air friction during flight. From this I’ve learned the importance of keeping your golf balls clean so as to improve the aerodynamics of it.

You don’t wanna lose your golf balls? Cut those bushes.
