RFID is the next generation identification technology that is touted to take over the bar codes that are found in off the shelf products used for easy product identification.

RFID is a whole lot more than just holding a value which can be read by a bar code reader. That’s because it can embed about 1000 bits of information which can be stored and reprogrammed like flash memory. This is by using a RFID writer that bombards the tag with radio wave energy which effectively programs it. Aside from that, the method of reading is more convenient because with a bar code reader you have to have contact with the barcode reader’s beam and the barcode tag. With RFID however, since you are using radio waves you only have to be within a certain proximity of the tag.
