fonacier.jpgLarry Fonacier is the clear leader in the PBA’s rookie of the year award garnering the highest score in statistical points (1,521) Coming from the pre play-offs he was in fifth place, but because his team eventually won the championship he was able to pile on more points.

In the UAAP, he was a force to be reckoned with. Finally emerging from the shadow of his upperclassmen (Villanueva, Alvarez and Gonzales) to be the focal point of the team. He was the undisputed go-to-guy for them in 2003 2004 and he delivered.

If he wins the Holy Grail for all rookies, this might be a record in the making, as previously 2 Ateneo Blue Eagles have won the rookie of the year Award (Alvarez & Villanueva) What’s more amazing about it was that he ended his career in the UAAP with an ACL injury. Then was picked 14th overall in the PBA draft by Red Bull who took a chance on him. In the post season he contributed solid minutes and plays to help his team win the championship.

I hope he wins it, coming from where he started (a career ending injury and picked 14th) and ending up at the finals, he truly deserves the award.
