Privilege and Responsibility

With privilige comes responsibility… I attended mass today at the Ateneo de Davao University Chapel. I can’t help but be touched by today’s sermon.

The priest talked about the responsibility that one acquires when one is privileged. Since most of those who attended were students, he gave as an example their very existence in the Ateneo.

He said that they were priviliged to have parents who provided them with a chance to study at the Ateneo. But they have the responsibility to make the most of their stay. Like taking advantage of the facilities, so that one can maximize their learning. Modesty aside, Ateneo de Davao is one of the best schools outside of Manila and Cebu because of the teachers and facilities. Like also taking advantage of the great english teachers, after four years in the Ateneo, one must be fluent already in speaking in english… If one did not do that, then he had shortchanged himself by wasting a very good opportunity.

Which is very true in life. When one is gifted with advantages (i.e. great intellect, wealth, ambition… etc) one must make the most out of them. For the good of others too of course and not just for oneself.

I wish I knew who that Jesuit priest was, he seemed very insightful.
