Redhat Linux 9.0
Reinstalled it into my pc because I just about gave up trying to figure out how to get kudzu to autodetect my LAN card…Turns out… during installation, RHL 9.0 couldn’t detect my LAN card either… I ended up choosing it manually… grarrrrr…So now I have Linux up and running correctly in my PC… *cheers*
I copied the installers to my mom’s pc and installed it via the network using the http protocol… how did I do that? well you have to copy the installation cds to the htdocs folder of the Apache webserver(or in the equivalent directory if you are using IIS) then boot using the installation cd. Afterwards type linux askmethod in the prompt for installation type…
You might wonder why I use this method to install, given that, I have to have have two pc’s available… that’s because in my previous work, when I was installing RHL’s in servers… my installation would never complete because one way or another the CDROM would hiccup during the package installation step. When that happened, RHL would ask you to repeat everything from the beginning, wasting about 45 mins of your time (try that when you’re chasing after a 5:30 shuttlebus and let’s see if you’ll still stay level headed… hehehe)… So I’ve learned to copy it instead to a webserver and install it remotely… the great thing about it, was that you could save your installation script to a file and every server afterwards would just load the install script… saved me buckets of time in the process because network reads are a hell lot faster than cdrom reads…
Next steps are trying to find a good editor for PHP in linux… turns out also that the IDE that I use doesn’t have a version for Linux… Yikes!!!
Oh well, that’s what I like about this in the first place… being able to get my hands dirty…
You might wonder why I’m using Redhat Linux 9.0, instead of getting a more recent copy such as Fedora or the free Ubuntu that I have… it’s because I’m such a frikkin speed freak that I know that getting a newer version will bog down my computer… Redhat 9.0 just zips along fine in my PIII 750 mhz…
Now I’m looking for a Linux Users Group in Davao… I think the local computer science orgs are a good place to stalk… err I mean start…
