Site is up again…

Yup after 6 hours my two sites were finally up again.

There seemed to have been a problem with the Cpanel license that the leased servers had. Knocked out the sites during the back-up procedure.

That’s tough really. I have to emphatize with the guys at ploghost, that’s how life is in the service business. The service you provide could mean death to your customers if you don’t deliver. Web Admins have little difference I guess from their cousin’s in manufacturing support.

I used to work as a sysadmin in a manufacturing company, we quantified our work by the minutes that our systems were running. One missed step and it would mean millions. Millions not only in lost capacity time to produce, but millions in terms of product damage. whenever our system crashed it sometimes caused the machines to lock our product into the machine and permanently damage it.

Monthly reports to directors were always about time.

1. Time that our systems were down, who/what/why caused it, how do we prevent it.
2. How much downtime do we need to get some maintenance done.
3. How did we improve the overall system by speeding up what process and how much additional capacity did it add to the system.

I was lucky enough though to not always get the hard end of the stick. Due diligence was what kept our system humming. Always staying on top and covering the bases when it comes to system monitoring and maintenance. Not to mention having dedicated and dependable teammates on your side.

I miss those days. Moving with a sense of urgency and purpose. But not the waking up at 3 AM in the morning to rush to the factory to fix a crashed server that should have been replaced eons ago but because of budget constraints just wasn’t so.

I have to say though, that once in a while, because of politics, you have to allow the system to crash, so that you can use the “I-told-you-so” card to your bosses and they in turn pass it on to their bosses… that had to be the easiest way to loosen somebody’s stingy pocket…. hehehe

Yes, you hit the spot right there. Sometimes, after all the different weird problems we’ve had to encounter in the last 29 months of operation, I wonder what else would one day knock on our doors. I was just relieved it was not any hacking issue. A lot of politically related clients calling me up and thinking of another PCIJ incident would sprung up. Thanks for believing in us.

No problem Yuga. I was in your position once, so I can easily understand.

Yelling won’t fix the problem, understanding your situation and giving encouragement always seemed to make it go faster. Learned that from my Dept Manager… hehehe
