Origin of the Hoop…
People might wonder why my blog’s name is hoopaddict. Considering of course that I’m not that much of a die-hard-bleeding-leather-whole-world-revolving-basketball fan… That is, unless of course, it’s the UAAP Season or NBA Finals…
Then again, even if it’s the UAAP season, I never attend live games because I find that the cost of buying a ticket and actually commuting to the venue from my home as downright extravagant… hahaha… (my ancient chinese ancestors would be whooping it up right about now for this display of frugality)
So why hoopaddict? well it started as a proposed website for me and kohai… where it would be a hopeful venue for us to post basketball related topics and users to do the same and hopefully start a small community and gain some little revenue to keep it sustainable… so it didn’t exactly shoot up like a rocket… but I did learn a lot from it… that was the key point…
I knew of course that that was already a vague concept *slash* shot in the dark kind of business given that basketball sites were cropping up like shawarma stands… and of course our lack of a business model would eventually just show us in the end that we were wasting our time, of course we didn’t have any *real* good source of information to pump in as content to keep our users in our site either… hey did I mention that this was decided under 3 min worth of discussion between me and kohai? Like I think it went something like, so what do we do? let’s do a basketball site. Ok…. business models like that will make a VC cringe and reel over… hehehe
I actually programmed a VB interface to post game stats live into our website… our *proposed* edge was to give users real live scores and live-action updates… then of course when I tried it out I actually had a hard time listing down the shoots, passes, steals… it gave me an insight into the fact that this was no one-man show I was embarking upon…
In the end, I don’t call it a crash-and-burn type of failure… because of course I came out economically unscathed by the experience… the *economically* viable webhost wasn’t burning a hole in my pocket.
So if I have to take score of this endeavor, I have to say I came out on top…
Hoop Misses:
1. Wasted some money on host service.
2. Wasted time in programming a VB interface to upload live stats.
Hoop Scores:
1. Learned to program in PHP, my money being at stake was the best motivator for me to crack the wip.
2. Learned how to purchase a domain name at a low price.
3. Finally applied for a credit card and found it’s usefulness in one’s life… use and not abuse I have to emphasize
4. Learned how to program VB to post in a site using FTP.
5. Learned how to administer a Website using CPanel.
5 out of 7 ain’t bad I have to say… Not to mention that all this effort bore fruit… with my newest site…
Intrinsically of course we all know that one has to sacrifice a little to gain a little more…
One of the best deals in my life…
